I know this wasn't meant to be sad--that's the whole point of the story!--but that line made me tear up a little. It's such a poignant detail.
But thankfully, you took a swipe at Leemo, and then I felt that balance was restored. :-D

Sweat glistened on his skin; he wiped it from his brow. He’d become quite an outdoorsman. A smile crossed his face. She’d have been impressed.
I can totally picture Bill being happy swinging his axe and doing physical labour.
I love Bill realising Laura's dream.

Although I must confess I am not completely sure that Bill would be able to find this happiness within himself, you have made a convincing case for his doing so and I find this depiction of him compelling and very appealing. I would love to believe that after all the unforeseen and/or undesired circumstances of his life, all the hardship and responsibility thrust upon him and the cruel curtailment of his life with Laura, he could find peace and contentment in this simple existence, the knowledge of the love he'd shared and in her dream made his reality.
Honestly, I haven't done this justice, articulacy seems to have deserted me, but suffice it to say that I found this to be a moving, intelligent and engaging piece of work. Thank you very much.
