I totally have a soft spot for Cottle and I was always frustrated at how little he was used in BSG.

You've written him so very well; a perfect balance of the gruff, grumbly exterior he always exhibited, and also the soft, sweet old man beneath his bravado. I think that he had a tremendous amount of affection for both Bill and Laura, and he probably had the biggest insight into their relationship.

Thanks for sharing this, it was lovely. :)

Oh big grumbly Cottle trying to tell her a story!!! So cute. I like him getting frustrated and then just caressing and kissing her hand. you have really done him justice here. Well done.

As always, Cottle improves every fiction in which he appears. It seems very in character for him that he would wait for her to be asleep to show how much he cares. The attempted fairytale picks up his habit of mock-paternalism, the way he calls her "young lady."

"No poison apple, dwarfs, or handsome prince.

Only the cancer, a failed doctor, and a broken admiral."

The parallel structure creates a wonderful rhythm. I love the last line especially.

I just love this scene, it gives me everything. A little smile and a little heart stabbing in 100 words!! Cottle is so grumpyly sweet, taking a shot at the happy ever after fairytale and then realizing no way is that him. This line Only the cancer, a failed doctor and a broken admiral just about killed me!! Ouch!! Escpecially the failed doctor, knowing how he wanted to save her. Sniff!! Okay off to find a tissue!! Great work!!
