Last Day Past

The hatch spun open and closed.

Unbutton jacket.  Pour drink.  Turn.

Her glasses and pen atop a slew of paperwork spread out on the coffee table before her, she sat on the couch lost in thought.

“Laura?”

Her eyes met his.  “I remember when my biggest concern was deciding what to pack for the weekend decommissioning ceremony.  Had I known this was where we were going to end up, I’d have re-evaluated my wardrobe choices.”

He grunted, set his drink on the coffee table and sat down beside her.  “Mine was figuring out what the hell I was going to do for the rest of my life in blissful retirement.”

“Quorum members squabbling amongst themselves, ships clamoring for supplies we don’t have.”

“A ragtag fleet on the run from the Cylons low on fuel, ammunition, and morale.  He sighed.  “Sometimes I really hate this job.”

“Me, too.” She twined her fingers with his.  “I can’t remember the sound of their voices anymore-my father, my sisters, Billy.” She leaned into him.

“My sister, my son, Kara.” He squeezed her hand.

She looked up at him.  “That was then.”

“And this is now.” He brushed a tender kiss across her lips.
