Full story this time:

A woman and two teenage kids rented next door to my mother in the spring. Then the woman's electricity was cut off, a bad thing made infinitely worse by temps in Tennessee in what was then August. She managed to steal electricity from someone else (sounds crazy, but she siphoned off someone behind her into the abandoned house

I think I would beg, beg, beg the woman to let me keep Gracie. Try to explain to her that no money for electricity or flea preventative is not the best situation to keep four pets in (she probably knows this perfectly well, but it doesn't hurt to try). The landlord, I'm sure, has a perfect right to kick them out if his house is being trashed, and it's going to be awfully hard for them to find another place to go with four animals. Tell her at least you can help by taking one of the dogs. Emphasize that it's in her and her kids' best interests, not just Gracie's, to let her go.

I don't know if any of this will help. I hope so. That's a very sad situation for everyone involved. :-(

From what I've seen, and I'm in no way an expert, it varies state by state. You might be able to look up the laws on animal cruelty in your state by google search--though you've probably tried that already

Oh, babe. What an appalling situation. I don't have anything useful to say, but I hope things turn out well for everyone (and really, I think what you're trying to do is in everyone's best interests, even the tenant). Maybe the vet will have some ideas? *crosses toes and fingers*

I don't have any advice, not being familiar with the laws etc, but just wanted to send you my wishes and hopes that this works out for you and Grace. It's heartbreaking the cruelty that is out there and you are such a caring person. Hope this works out x
