PLASTIC shopping bags may be banned from Australia by the end of the year, under plans being considered by Environment Minister Peter Garrett.

The federal government is looking to either impose a levy on each bag, or ban the bags outright, a newspaper report claims.

yeah i know those little tartan things, i also know lots of old people wouldn't want to use them due to appearances (some may think it makes them look older than they really are)
but maybe these are things people just need to learn to get over, and maybe those tartan things can be made in black or something, then they wont look so lame.

Plastic tubs, how big are they, would people want to store them in their homes? or were they used to take the stuff to the car and left at the supermarket like trolleys.

I agree entirely with point 4

delicatessens i have found wrap stuff in paper then put the paper package in a plastic bag, have you seen otherwise?

I'm not normally the wretching type, but this almost got me:

"Australia uses about 4 billion plastic bags a year, with most going to landfill... the average plastic shopping bag consumes about as much energy in its life cycle as a teaspoonful of crude oil... China, which consumes as many bags in 48 hours as Australia does in a year"

Yeah - China has quite a few environmental issues, they also have double the population Australia has.
Its a tough call with China, its like trying to stop the whaling in Japanese waters
maybe one day things will change over there = but right now I think economic growth and stability is unfortunately a higher up on the agenda than the environment :(

The outcry against banning plastic bags makes me wonder how society managed to function prior to their invention... ;)
