2009

Barack Obama was elected President during what was pretty much the most frustrating week I'd ever had. Because of circumstances that couldn't be avoided, I missed the headlines, I missed the parties in the streets, and when I finally crashed on the sofa at the place we were staying, the smile on my face was 50% because of Obama's election, 50% ( Read more... )

Dear 'drew,

I have been carrying the thought of you in my heart for many months now, silently wishing you well. I don't know what brought me here today, but the feeling was so strong I could not deny it.

Damn. Why can't I be this psychic about lottery numbers?

I watched this concert live yesterday. Recorded it, too. I've been a Grobanite for many years, so I had to watch my boy Josh. But oh how I loved ol' Pete for singing the angry verses of Woody's song, the words very few people know:

"In the squares of the city - in the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me."

Well, it's our land now. The ball's in our court now. Time for us to sink one of those NBA three-point baskets - and STUFF that thing in the face of conservatives. (Oh how I LOVES basketball metaphors!)

I'm drinking champagne with breakfast tomorrow. Here's to Barack Obama -and my favorite young Democrat - you.

All the best - Old Dem

My dear brilliant 'drew -

Salmon swim upstream in the fall, the buzzards return to Hinckley in March, and I am likewise compelled to visit your LiveJournal every February 15th.

This is the third anniversary of my first comment here. The political paradigm has certainly changed since the first words I wrote to you, a sign of hope that any and all things are possible - including your dreams. I am still whispering your name to the stars and chanting on your behalf.

Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha.

Be well. Be strong. Believe.

Love, Old Dem

And can you believe it? Three years now, and I'm still upset about the Democratic primary for the US Senate seat from Ohio.

Lee Fisher? Tim, come on, man. LEE FISHER?

Om Mani Padme Hum.

Wait. Did you not hear? It's not just Lee Fisher going for Voinovich's seat - Jennifer Brunner wants it, too. Tim Ryan doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell if he throws his hat in the ring, especially if anyone bothers to ask Tim Russo about it ( ... )

I'd read about Jennifer Brunner first, and I thought: Well, ok, she's a good one, and I can get behind it. And then what, later that day, Lee stumbles out of the gate like he's late for his plane. D'oh.... Come on, guy--bad form.

But it probably has to be Fisher, only because to lose Jennifer (or any Dem) at SoS means to kiss the state of Ohio goodbye as it gets sucked back into the toilet of feudal Republicanism.

My fingers are crossed that Harry Reid loses re-election. Presently, all my fingers are crossed for one reason or another.
