Are you by any chance near train tracks, partiularly ones that freight trains go along? There was a little hobo camp set up not far from the house I grew up iin and from what I heard from a guy I knew in college,it was one of the places that trainhoppers would catch out from. Met a few of college trainhopper acquaintence's trainhopping friends and they were pretty cool
