Obama's speech tonight was awesome. He's such a cutie, god damn. It stuns and amazes me that anyone could watch that man speak, listen to what he wants to do, where he wants to bring this country and conclude that he's unfit to lead us. The only argument against him I can even understand being a concern is his lack of experience, but goddamn, in ( Read more... )

This is pretty easy to do if you don't share his goals.

I could usually totally appreciate that, but with as much shit as we're in right now, I guess I just find it difficult to see how the really general goal of "making shit less awful" would be something anyone could look and and go "Nah, I think I'm okay with how things are now, I'm good."

At such a general level, yeah, it's hard to argue with a goal like that. Remember that even reasonable people like you and I can have very different ideas about what constitutes "less awful" in some respects.

For instance, I know we're on the same page when it comes to issues like gay rights, but I would wager that you and I have disparate views on the role of government as it applies to things like welfare and health care. "Less awful" for you might be "robbery" in my view, just as my "less awful" might be "social injustice" in yours.

I don't mean to put words in your mouth, by the way. I sincerely apologize if I have hypothetically misrepresented you.

Nah, I can completely appreciate that view when it comes to specific issues. I really only mean on the most broad and general level. I feel like.. if I were an independent voter (not Independent, but y'know), even if I didn't agree with all of a candidate's views on individual issues, I'd be willing to make a decision based on their general goals for this country, particularly in a time like this where, the way I see it, we're in pretty deep shit. But I dunno, I was raised by yellow dog Democrats so I can't say I'm too familiar with the feeling of not supporting most if not all of a candidate's views on certain issues.

I also always feel like a tool discussing politics with people that are older than me because fuck, this is the first presidential election I can actually vote in, I really don't know what I'm talking about. Sorry if I sound like a retard.

Guess what? The average IQ in this country is only slightly higher than that of a rutabega. I think they're going to vote for McCain.

We're fucked.

I missed his speech unfortunately, I was in the city at the time. However, being in the city allowed me to see something amazing. At Times Square they had chairs and speakers set up across from one of the big TV screens and a shit ton of people were there watching his speech. I was absolutely amazed.
