And it's really telling that Two chose the name that Jamie gave him on the Wheel...

I think John Smith is an inevitable name for the Doctor. He's used it as his alias in AN UNEARTHLY CHILD and things just keep circling back: Susan's favorite rock group was allegedly John Smith, and the (I forget)...

Also, if you translate the name, it means, "Gift of the Metalworker", and on a deeper layer, "Magician." Below THAT it means, "Son of Cain, the Outcast," and Cain itself means, "Metalsmith." This old belief died out very hard, Scotland being one of the last holdouts of the lore. Jamie's timeline would be very familiar with the concept of an otherworldly metalworker.
