I am very pleased that the final was no disappointment, and that we've actually seen the best teams in it, no matter how expected or unexpected. When the Japanese player was called offside (which as was proven was not offside) and thus robbed of a clear opportunity to score I became rather worried that the game might be once more influenced by referee decisions. It brought up bad memories, as we've had that in the last mens cup quite a lot.
It was a great final, hardly ever a dull moment. Both teams fought as hard as they could. And I would have been happy with either of them winning, because they so clearly put their hearts in it. (though I still think Japan did something special)
Unexpected, but cool. Chile and Germany proved we are brothers in another more thing. Chile lost against Venezuela 2 X 1 in Copa América. Bitter flavor of reality. PUAF! Anyways, I have a link which directs to a cool vid sampling a moment during U21 EURO. Congratulations to Japan :).... They could prove that women can do whatever, even being world champions in soccer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Peace!
The USNT was showing great football throughout the tournament and besides, they had no silver medals yet as far as I know, so that has its pros, too, heh :)
I'm especially happy for Japan as they've been my no.2 womens team after my own, and as, fittingly, it's been them that have kicked us out there's been extra incentive.
... they should play a game, maybe some charity thing where they could play against each other, or at least in mixed teams... that'd be quite cool. And I bet they'd get a big enough audience for that...
I'd like to see ours do that, too.
That's true. They had enough trouble, as a team, as well as as a nation, in the last couple of months, and it's great to see where effort and belief can get you. I'm glad it can't be seen as just some 'aww, the poor people, at least they got football champions after it all' - thing though, because they have played skilled, disciplined and very lovely to look at football, and it's not just some fluke they won.
Like most football fans I don't exactly love penalties, but the US team had so many opportunities during the game that they didn't manage to use, thus, I guess no one can complain about it or this outcome. And you're right, the penalties really killed them from the inside, while Japan had not much trouble to keep it together most of the time.
Nontheless the US played a great game and a brilliant world cup, and I'm damn glad to see teams that are so skilled.
