WHOA. That's gnarly. This is going to sound stupid because of lack of knowledge, but did they have to open her up like a spay? I've only helped in one mastectomy and it was just under the skin.

Not stupid :) No cutting into the abdominal wall, just lifting off the mammary tissue because you are right it is just under the skin. Though it took longer than it usually does because the tissue was thin in some places and there was a lot of fat around the tissue in others ;) There are some pretty major blood vessels involved too which has to be ligated.

Ouch, that sure is a long one. That area under the arm can be the worst to heal up. Hope she has a smooth recovery!

I want to pet the shaved part of her belly when I look at those pics. IT FEELS SO INTERESTING. :P

I loved shaved bellies. It will be interesting to see how it looks once it's healed. My best wishes to her. What a good kitty.

Yikes, so many stitches. I hope she is recovering OK. We had one kitty a few years ago who had an incision not quite that big for a hernia operation, it was closed with staples...I guess maybe staples are needed when the incision is deeper vs. stitches shallower, for really long ones? The shaved belly is fun to pet, I have one at my house who was shaved for ultrasound and I've loved the feel as her fur grows back. Best wishes for a good recovery for Gwen.
