MISFITS

I’m not in the habit of going around saying I have “daddy issues,” though, while I haven’t looked into any sort of official diagnosis, I will admit a professional who focuses on such things might be willing to apply a more formal variation on the term to describe some of my impulsively developed coping mechanisms as a result of learning ( Read more... )

Great work - I love how you were able to tie in both the prompt and the holiday so effortlessly for this. I can relate in some ways, and not in others, but I really respect your attitude toward partner and your son. It really comes across that you feel so lucky to have them in your life, the way you sing their praises, but I also get the distinct feeling that they are just as lucky to have you.

Thanks very much! It was and it wasn't effortless... it poured forth from me easily because it was close to home, and off the cuff, but it was a challenge since it was not at all what I'd planned...

I'd originally hoped to write on the advantage of white privilege - which is pretty much a 2-day project - but I'd thought the deadline was tonight, not last night, and when I realized my error yesterday about 4 hours ahead of the poll, I had to suddenly switch gears and go with my 2nd choice, which had been to showcase women's rights issues based on the Catbird putting his mate's nest on a pedestal, but then I had that whole weird bit of sudden animal habit trivia on Father's Day that fortunately helped me to bring it all together in a way that looking back on it, I now can't imagine how I was going to write it without! :-)

So, in many respects, I feel like it was all a sort of happy accident, which may be way more than you want to know, but that's how it all worked out! XD

Mom was the one who helped to put me into a positive perspective on my expectations for raising a boy, but in so doing, she also made me take stock in how much greater a challenge it would be to raise a young boy into the kind of man who always would treat women with basic dignity and respect...
That's one of the things I worry about as I think about my son being born and raising him in these times to always treat everyone but especially with dignity and respect. Reading this helps put into perspective that a lot of what you wrote about Minion reminds me of my husband and if we're good role models for him that's half the battle. Minion sounds like a good guy.

If you've got a loving man who respects everyone and puts his family's needs above his own, I think that's way more than half the battle... that's starting 20 feet from the goal line, and definitely worth counting your blessings over! Not that there won't be challenges, or that means you've got this in the bag, but if you both always put love first, then you have all the tools you need to build the foundation that will support your child... and he's lucky to have you both! <3

Thanks! I think I try to approach most things in life with an introspective lens... I've always felt it's important to be self-aware, not with the misperception that the world revolves around me, but rather, with the understanding that my actions can have a direct impact on my immediate surroundings, even in ways I'm not always aware, so I should maintain a firm handle on them, and the underlying context that brings them about. I know I can't always control what happens in my life, but whenever possible, I try to be in control of how I react to it. ;-)
