The Road Not TakenI don’t really think of my Dad as the outdoorsy type.  Oh, sure, up until he and my Mom downsized to a condo and moved out of the country a couple years ago, he still mowed all ¾ acres of the old house yard behind a push mower.  At 70.  And, I guess, come to think of it, there were plenty of family camping trips for all of us when ( Read more... )

Yes, indeed, though, I figure we're all better off in this case that it did! Thanks much!

What a wonderful entry! I'm glad you shared this. You must have some wonderful memories. The description of the ’49 Plymouth Special looking like a giant armadillo made me laugh out loud. It sounds like you had wonderful parents.

Thank you! I'm so happy that stories about my family are met well... With 5 brothers, a sister, and 4 parents, I've certainly got plenty of them. I could actually write a unique family tale every week, but, I try to mix it up enough to hopefully avoid being too predictable. Plus, these are stories I've heard all my life, so I'd bore myself if that's all I ever told here, but, it's good to get some of these out there beyond the borders of our family. I did indeed have wonderful parents, and, in fact, I still do. My Dad will be checking this out a little later this afternoon and correcting any mistakes I made, or perhaps clucking his tongue at any liberties I took, though, aside from a minor touch of hyperbole at the beginning, I think this is more or less pretty much how it happened, so I hope it meets well with him, too. :)

I really enjoyed how neatly you tied all the ends in the story.

(And the part with the gun and money bag in the trunk of that car? I kept waiting for the cops to find them. *giggle* It's just as well that they did not look.)

I know, right???!! It's like the man must have been wearing his karma around him like a shield, or something... I mean, can you imagine? Heck, _I_ was totally waiting for that to be the cruxt of the story when I first heard it... Dad passes it off like it was no big deal, but, to me, it's the biggest part of it. I mean, c'mon... DUDE! You were racing down the highway in a tank that practically begged to be pulled over, with a LOADED weapon, and every appearance of the spoils of armed robbery! Man, that was totally a different era, wasn't it? Talk about the times changin'! Thanks for dropping in... glad you had fun with this!

Well, daughter, you did a most excellent job sharing details of a family secret! What a great story you told, weaving interehttp://l-stat.livejournal.net/img/spacer.gif?v=13339sting facts with memories and garnishing lavishly with word pictures. It gave me lots of smiles and I loved how you delayed the "punch line" of what had ultimately happened with the gun and sack of money.

Thanks for the kudos thrown my way --- being the wife of your Dad is a journey never boring :)

I love you. Mom
