Ebay

Canon 300D/Rebel/Kiss DSLR. No question. Easy enough to use with plenty of room for you to expand your skills and take some awesome shots with a 'proper' camera.

It's EF lense compatible so when you decide to upgrade or modernise, you can keep your glass (lenses). A camera is only as good as the glass you can get for it.

Battery life is good, extra batteries are cheap anyways.

I've found http://www.dpreview.com/ to be a pretty good site for researching cameras.
An extremely general recommendation: look at models made by traditional camera manufacturers like Canon, Nikon, or Olympus. Avoid those made by traditional consumer-electronics firms, like Sony, HP, or Toshiba.

I was about to suggest the same website. They'll tell you everything you need to know.

Also second the comment about camera makers - Canon and Nikon are tops.
