Many years ago, I read about a group of women who together learned how to safely perform abortions at home. They practiced on each other during menstruation. They pledged to keep the knowledge alive because they were concerned that Bush Sr. would find a way to take away the right to control their fertility.

At the time, I thought that seemed paranoid, because our society was wise enough to acknowledge that forced pregnancy was wrong and a terrible intrusion into the right of a woman to privately control her body and fertility. How I wish I still thought that.
