Key Porter in crisis

"Yesterday afternoon, the staff of Key Porter Books were informed that the company would be drastically downscaling. According to a report in the National Post, 15 staffers were laid off, and a smaller, unspecified number were transferred to the offices of parent company H.B. Fenn and Company in Bolton, Ontario.

I don't work for the company, no. But, I posted it publicly so that it goes to my Facebook account so people there can see how poorly publishing is doing in Canada (many I used to work with). Everyone seems to think publishers make loads of money, and that they can hand out huge cheques to authors and it is just not the case.

Literary related friends in real life and on lj have told me the same thing. I have a relation, via marriage, who lost her job of 35 years recently when she was laid off from the largest NJ news paper. It appears that consumer money is just shifting away from paper and towards the internet.
