Part Three
She was pretty sure someone was following her.
She'd gotten pretty good at being able to tell when someone was on her trail during the months she'd been on her own, during the months after she'd fled from Smallville for good, and the last unfortunate soul that had been stupid enough to try something had been tasered with the top of the line taser that Lex Luthor's money had provided for her. She'd felt a little guilty at first, taking the money that Lex had offered, and she'd never forget the look in the bald billionaire's face as he'd taken her by the shoulders, insisting that she take it.
'I can never repay what you've lost, Chloe. I can never make up for what's been done. At least let me do this.'
And so she had agreed, taking the help that he offered, aware of the shock on his face when she'd actually hugged him goodbye. Apparently, Lex Luthor hadn't been hugged nearly enough in his life, not by people that that actually meant it, so her small gesture had rather stunned him. Then she had left, taken his money and run, ditching the first car quickly and taking a bus to another town before buying another one. Used, but reliable. She'd gone from city to city, never staying more than a few weeks in any one place, but she'd sort of liked this one, and she might have stayed longer if not for that guy she knew was watching her earlier. Even if she'd never caught him at it, he'd been watching her, and he looked like the type to ask questions, which was why she was currently headed to an all-night store to pick up a few things before she headed off to the next town. Chloe was pretty sure, however, that the guy from earlier was not the one following her now. And she kind of thought she might actually have two guys on her trail now.
This was so not good.
Chloe was careful to keep her steps even, not speeding up, not wanting to give away the fact that she knew she was being followed. If he - they - knew that she was aware that she wasn't alone, then whoever it was would probably take measures to make sure she couldn't get away. She would lose the element of surprise, and she knew that was essential in fighting back.
She also knew that there was no way she could manage to taser two people at once.
The footsteps were closing in on her, and Chloe slid her hand inside her jacket, finding the inside pocket and getting her taser, taking the next corner sharply, waiting until she'd almost passed it by before she did so, and it was then that she realized her mistake: there weren't two people after her, there were three. And one of them had been waiting to head her off.
She screamed as the person grabbed her, slamming her rather meager body weight backwards as hard as she could, catching him by surprise and forcing him to hit the wall, and when his hand came up to cover her mouth, trying to cut off her scream, she bit down hard, letting the heel of her boot slide painfully down his shin as she did so, and he cursed loudly before letting her go... Chloe trying to make a run for it, only for his friends to show up. A hand closed around her arm, and she went to use her taser on him, only to find herself thrown rather roughly into the wall. The taser slid from her grasp as her hand hit the wall, Chloe watching as it clattered to the concrete. She lunged for it, but it was kicked away just an instant before she was backhanded by her attacker, the force of the blow knocking her down entirely. She felt blood in the corner of her mouth, and she cried out again as a hand grasped her by the hair and yanked her to her feet, Chloe still struggling, but knowing that it was a lost cause by now. She was unarmed and outnumbered.
"Not so tough without your little taser, are you, bitch?" a voice asked, and she knew without looking that it was the guy that had followed her before. The college boy that couldn't take no for an answer and apparently, he'd brought some friends this time.
"Kind of sad, you need backup to attack a teenage girl," she hissed back at him, refusing to cower and cringe and give him the reaction that he wanted. She'd fight back until she couldn't fight back anymore. In her short life, she'd been buried alive, thrown out a window, nearly frozen by a meteor freak, infected by some creepy parasite, and nearly blown up, just to name a few things, and she was not about to let some stupid frat boy be the one to break her.
Another slap. "Now listen here, bitch-"
"Get your hands off of her!" A new voice, an angry voice that she didn't know, and then she suddenly found herself free from the frat boy's grip, Chloe stumbling back a few steps, holding herself up against the wall as she watched what was happening with wide eyes.
Someone had come to her rescue, and he was throwing punches and moving too quickly for her to get a good look at who he was, the low lighting in the alley she'd been yanked into not helping her see her rescuer. He'd nearly taken the frat guy out with one blow, her attacker reeling, and he'd already moved on to the guys' friends. One of the guys was limping slightly - she figured that was the one that had grabbed her, and when he made as if to enter the fray, she lashed out, kicking him hard in the side of the knee, causing it to give out and him to fall to the ground. Her rescuer was taking care of the other guy easily, but the first one was starting to get up, so Chloe lunged for her taser, picking it up and using it on the attacker before he could lay a hand on the guy trying to help her. The sound of the jolt caught the good guy's attention, and he spun around, letting go of the guy he'd been pummeling, the two that were sort of standing (though one was limping really badly now thanks to Chloe's kick) grabbing the one that had just been tasered to near-unconsciousness and dragging him away, leaving Chloe and her rescuer alone, and it was then that she finally got a good look at the man.
The very same man that she could have sworn had been watching her earlier.
