Back in October a colleague asked me if I would be willing to make a pair of Viking trousers as a gift for her brother, and said she would pay me for my time. I will do that, but be warned, "growing" this sort of beard is expected to take quite some time...

I like the idea of making the reflective material decorative as well.

Have you seen the "dwarven battle bonnets" some folks are knitting? A knit hat in grey to look like a helmet, with a knitted beard extension. Very fun. (Perhaps not as realistic as you're aiming for). http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dwarven-battle-bonnet

Oh, those are cute. If my attempt to make one from real hair doesn't work out I might try something with yarn instead. It is always good to have a back-up plan.
