GOLD is a cable TV channel (now part of a network, it screens British (mostly BBC originals) TV shows in syndication (though the term is never used here). It began in the 1990s showing 'classic' British TV, and since around 2000 it made a gradual shift to its current incarnation of showing mostly Britcoms (plus the occasional US comedy or movie). There are now other sister channels screening documentaries, nature programmes etc, including Dave, which screens QI, Have I Got News For You, Top Gear etc in syndication. It's made a few 'specials' in recent years, commemorating anniversaries of classic Britcoms (eg Blackadder, Fawlty Towers) - I think this is the only original programming GOLD does. Perhaps not as high-quality as similar BBC programmes (compare their respective Blackadder specials) but nevertheless worth watching.
Sounds nice! Do the letters G-O-L-D stand for anything, or is the all caps just so the name stands out in text? (I'm imagining people yelling it when they read it aloud. *g*)
According to their station idents & ad bumpers it stands for "Go On Laugh Daily" which I have always thought sounds a rather desperate and pained attempt at devising a slogan. It always makes me think of ENSA being re-stated as "Every Night Something Awful". I think they should hire someone being made redundant from NASA or one of its partner organisations cos they're pretty good at acronyms there :)
The continuity voiceover people always say it as G-O-L-D, but everyone else calls it 'Gold', because it used to be called UK Gold and G-O-L-D sounds rather contrived, like when you say B-A-T-H in the presence of your dog so he doesn't run away.

Sun readers don't watch QI! Far too intellectual for them.
