You know, I think I might be with you on the Alex/Ray, they've at least got a natural sort of rapport as opposed to the one-sided sledgehammer that is whatever passes for Gene/Alex in this show. Bring it on!

I read a few at married_on_mars. I still love the pairing idea, but didn't see anything that really nailed it for me.
There is definitely potential with Alex/Ray. After the series is over, I might just have to take a crack at it. I'd do it for Halloween (Come As You're Not) but I'm sort of committed to a different costume.
Assuming I do go ahead with the party, I hope I can count on your attendance. :)
