Title: Crime and Punishment
Fandom: Dr. Who/Torchwood
Pairing: Nine/Kathy Swanson
Rating: G
Wordcount: 565

“Kathy, my wild, sweet Kathy. You must have been name for Wuthering Heights. Big Bronte fan, your mum?”

DS Swanson didn’t appear the least bit amused or impressed, but at least she was still standing there, instead of marching back to her desk and leaving him alone in his cell.

It wasn’t the incarceration that bothered him. The Doctor had been imprisoned all over the universe and survived just fine, thank you, but this time he was by himself, and he’d had just about enough of that.

In fact, he’d come back to Earth with at least the hope of finding a human worth traveling with for a bit, once he’d dealt with that invasion in London. Turned out the TARDIS had a few ideas of her own, taking him to Cardiff as though she were looking for something there.

He took a peek outside to try and determine the date and that’s when the trouble started. One minute he’d been asking a likely looking passer-by exactly what year it was and the next he’d been arrested for loitering in front of his own ship, a crime so heinous it apparently required a fine and a night in Her Majesty’s Prison. If he didn’t want to be alone he had to keep Kathy talking to him.

“Named for my Grandmum. Where she got it is anybody’s guess. Now will you please stop rattling on and let me get some work done?”

“You’re really going to keep me here all night. Just for standing somewhere?”

“For trying to get to someone to stand there with you. Conspiracy to loiter. We don’t want bad elements congregating on our streets.”

“Course not. So I’m stuck here all night, am I?”

It was a game of course. If he really needed to get out, there were at least five ways he could think of and only two of them would involve actual violence.

“That’s right.”

“And you’re stuck here with me.”

“Seems that way.”

“Low man on the totem pole, Detective Sergeant?”

Her narrowed eyes and exasperated sigh told him she didn’t appreciate the comment, but amending it to reflect her gender would have been worse.

“I’m going back to my desk now. You got anything else smart to say, it’ll have to wait until the next drunk gets pulled in.”

He didn’t want her go.

“Can I at least get some tea?”

The Doctor half expected her to growl at him through the bars or even attempt violence against his person, but instead she appeared to be considering his request.

“I could do with a spot myself. Come on, then.”

She fed a combination into the keypad on the wall. The Doctor watched the door open, and hung back, wondering if this was some kind of trick, making him vulnerable to an attack.

“I asked for tea, not escape from Alcatraz.”

“The law says you have to spend the night in custody. It doesn’t say you have to be in there.”

“Oh, Kathy,” he replied with exaggerated coyness.

“At my desk.”

Her head-shake was both aggravated and amused. If she could keep her sense of humour and handle the various obstacles that still faced her, she’d make a good police officer. Hopefully her future held more than baby-sitting dangerous loitering conspirators.

It would be a long night for him, but at least he’d have someone to talk to.

Title: Never Con a Con Man
Fandom: Dr. Who/Knot's Landing
Pairing: Jack Harkness/Greg Sumner (Stealth edit my ass!)
Rating: PG13
Wordcount: 630

Jack sat watching, as Greg Sumner looked over the pages of the contract.

After all these years on the con, he still got a thrill from this part, knowing the mark had been roped in and the payoff was on the way. Hard to believe there’d once been a time where he was innocent enough to express shock at the idea of using his wrist strap and a knowledge of history as means of making some extra money. That was before he woke up in custody on Cloudbar 4, and only got out because his conviction that he’d lost two years of his life was deemed grounds for an insanity plea.

Now he was all about taking care of himself and finding out what the Agency had done to him. If he got some fun along the way, well Jack had never been one to turn down fun.

Like this deal with Greg Sumner. Southern California in 1989 suited him, both by morality and fashion. He liked the blondes, he liked the clothes, and he could hardly wait to get the signature that would put a major score in his account back home.

Sumner himself was fascinating. A rich, powerful man, just corrupt enough to be the perfect victim for a self-cleaning con. Handsome too, Jack thought, but that hadn’t part of this particular con. He’d decided that Greg Sumner had too many women swirling around him to be sexually vulnerable. His weakness was the desire for more money and the power he believed came with it.

All he had to do was sign that contract, and Jack could head back to London. He’d been careful not to spend too much time in the sun. He couldn’t risk showing a tan in the middle of the London Blitz.

What the hell was taking Sumner so long? Still looking at the contract, face resting against two long fingers on his cheek and one under his lower lip.

Jack noticed the smile breaking out on Sumner’s slightly bulldoggish face. He knew he had a good smile himself, but Greg Sumner’s teeth were formidable.

“Quite a deal you’ve put together here, Captain.”

“You’ll make millions.”

“I have millions and I intend to keep them.”

He’d put down the papers, taken off his glasses and Jack couldn’t stop thinking of a song that had a shark and a jack knife in it. Probably time to get the hell out of Dodge, or Los Angeles County, anyway. Safety was a teleport away, but Jack was intrigued. He’d been made, maybe days ago. Greg Sumner had been toying with him. Not many people could say that.

“If you’re not interested, I’ll have to take this great opportunity elsewhere.”

He stood up, but took his time, curious to hear what Sumner had to say.

“Give me one reason why I shouldn’t call my friends at the SEC, the FBI, the LAPD, and maybe the Governor’s office, just for good measure and tell them exactly what kind of a scam you’ve been trying to run on me?”

If Sumner expected Jack to offer money, he had another thing coming, but as he’d already pointed out, he had plenty of that. Jack only had one other asset. It was worth try and giving himself up to Greg Sumner would hardly be a defeat.

He met the predatory smile with one of his own, and raised his best insinuating eye-brow.

Sumner didn’t flinch. That was a good sign.

“Here? In my office? That’s rather bold.”

“I have a ship,” he replied. She was parked by Capitol Records building. It was the closest thing Big Ben he could find in Los Angeles.

“You mean a yacht?”

Jack rolled up his sleeve and reached over the desk for Sumner’s arm.

“Not exactly.”

Title: Warriors
Fandom: Dr. Who/Torchwood
Pairing: Nine/Real Captain Jack
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 175

There would always be wars, and young men who needed to fight them. Old ones too, the Doctor thought, only slightly amused by the irony. Nine hundred years or twenty nine. No difference at all, if they believed the cause was just.

At least he knew the outcome of this war. There was hope for democracy and even humanity in the big picture. On the small scale things were different.

A single human being, a man who’d come to fight before his country had even declared war. The great pity was that he had to fight himself at the same time. It wasn’t fair and the Doctor knew he was only making it worse, but he couldn’t resist. The man was too attractive, the emotional need too great. Nothing happened, but even the emotional connection was dangerous for a man in Jack’s position.

Captain Harkness was shipping off to Wales and the Doctor had places to go, making it the right time to say good-bye.

Maybe there’d be someone better waiting for Jack in Cardiff.

Title: The Last Victim
Fandom: Dr. Who/Torchwood
Pairing: Lucy Saxon/Gwen Cooper
Rating: PG13
Wordcount: 230

“Jack, what’s happened to her?”

Gwen could see Jack trying to hold his emotions in check, which meant whatever she thought he might be feeling, it was far worse. He might share it with her later, in private, but right now they were representing Torchwood, and that meant stiff upper lip in the face of UNIT, the US envoy, and the wreck of a woman who had once been First Lady of the United Kingdom.

“Interrogation, incarceration, being married to a madman. God knows what else. But we’re going to take care of her now.”

Jack made it clear that the rehabilitation was Gwen’s job. He was relying on Gwen’s humanity and kindness to repair something that had been broken, something he couldn’t bear to look at himself.

What Jack had forgotten was Gwen’s own weakness. Lucy’s pale skin and empty eyes made her nearly irresistible. Gwen brought food and tried to offer healing, even though she barely understood the trauma involved, but Lucy whispered in Gwen’s ear and told her that solace wouldn’t come from sweets and a cuddly toy. She needed Gwen, all of her, more than she’d given Jack, Rhys or anyone else. The same things her Master had taken from her.

By the time Jack showed up to rescue her it was far too late; she was completely in love with Lucy and nearly as lost.

Title: Time After Time
Fandom: Dr. Who/Torchwood
Pairing: Ten/Gwen
Rating: G
Wordcount: 100

For a Time Lord, the Doctor had no luck with timing.

His hearts were still stinging from saying goodbye to Rose (again) and to Donna (forever) and even the growing knowledge that he’d lost so many others to his own emotional blindness.

He’d come to Torchwood looking for Jack, but met his second-in-command instead. Gwen’s smile had the force of a sonic screwdriver, zapping him with a spark of happiness that he’d never expected to feel again.

He was just asking if she’d interested in doing a bit of traveling, when Jack walked in.

No luck with timing at all.
