Three safe houses in two months and the nearly constant presence of keepers from the various governmental agencies tasked with making sure Will Tippin didn’t get killed. By the time he arrived in Wisconsin, he was starting to wonder why they were bothering.
If he couldn’t be a journalist what good was he anyway? Nothing else had brought him as much happiness as following a story from first lead to the front page, and thanks to a bunch of competing forces that Will still barely understood, he’d never be able to do that again.
His profession wasn’t the only loss. The baby-sitters might be out of sight, but privacy was only an illusion. Besides, all his loves were now tainted with tragedy. He could barely think of Francie or Syd without breaking into tears. The old threesome fantasy was long gone.
All he had was beer, Play Station and regrets.
