1. He really is cowardly and has many irrational phobias 2. He is, however, not naturally afraid of flying, heights, or other "Starscreams". 3. He can do things he's afraid to do; he just remains afraid -and sometimes shaky - while proceeding to do them; and has all his template's competence when he does. 4. He is not unintelligent. 5. His fears and related doubts prompt him to speak-out, even against superiors, to point out potential hazards.
Non-canon "growed-up a bit" TFA Skywarp has a few other traits in my head!canon: 6. Will resort to being coy, rather than directly confront others, to get what he needs to feel safe. 7. Feels safer with a strong protector nearby; even if he knows he is competent. 8. Prefers long range attacks, especially favors stunning bots from behind 9. Acts like something of a thug, like the G1 Skywarp, if he has enough allies around to make him feel safe. 10. Repetitive tasks, games, math, and logic puzzles can all be used to focus his thoughts away from his anxiety.
since you gave me the option, I'll say that although I have written TFA Rodimus a bit, I'm going to complete this meme with the G1 Hot Rod/Rodimus version. (TFA version is practically the same, except without the doubt and the Matrix

1. The trait! It's not actually supposed to be revealed, and yet it's supposed to be obvious. So, she must be written acting in a way that neither confirms nor denies a particular theory. This results in use of a kind of set of (things that should be shown as true), where none of these things can stand out so much to appear it is intended as a prominent inherited trait. 2. Starscream makes her angry. Whatever her normal/default characterization is presented to be, she will literally and figuratively see red when Starscream is about, or she even thinks she sees him nearby. 3. Trope wise, she's more Dark Action Girl, as opposed to Strika's Matronly form of Baroness, or Blackarachnia's Vamp. It's important that she's portrayed as a competent fighter and not overtly seductive

TFA Lockdown ('cause there's some other versions now, but I gather they are fairly similar):
1. He really does canonically use nick names and rather informal speech patterns. 2. He is not without martial skill, but he's become overall reliant on his mods and devices, so there's always that opening for characters who do truly understand mystical forces and sparks to defeat him, or for his tech to somehow be used against him. 3. He sincerely doesn't have any loyalty toward any faction. (His toy just needs a brand for legal protections in our real world) 4. He will strip a bot for parts; and he won't feel bad about it. 5. He's relentless in all of his pursuits, whether a specific bounty or his drive to keep upgrading.
Bonus: It's probably fair to say that he likes and finds thrills in the striping, hunting and upgrading (from 4-5).
i was cool with whatever version you settled on. ^_^
i really like point #2. it's believable, because it is easy to become reliant on one thing that seems to give you so much power, but it's also easy to get around if you know that's what you're up against. (and also canonically accurate, as Ratchet kicked his ass with/because of his EMP generators. ^_^)
