Transformers, Revenge of the What?

The New York Times lady hated it so much that I had to use a dictionary about 4 times when reading her review just to understand the depths of his hate. :D

[edit] Thanks, starlighter, for pointing out my huge gender blindness!

Seriously, I can't hate the movie when it gives rise to such hilarious bits of writing. The distaste is so palpable it practically oozes through the screen. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy cultivated his vocabulary just so he could rip into films like this one in new and interesting ways.

YES RIGHT? I'd watch it now just to see how horrible it is...

Actually, Manohla Dargis is a woman, which is kind of why you can just feel her contempt for the male of the species oozing through between the lines. I love watching big pretty shiny explosions and plots I don't have to think about at all, so I'm probably going to watch the movie, but I have to love her kind-of-subtle takedown of Michael Bay and Bush-loving conservative Republicans.

Whoops, way too little looking at the names before posting! *makes edits*

Hee hee, it is FANTASTIC because I spent the whole day at work reading every single Transformers review I could get my hands on, and they are all vitriolic, but I have to give Manohla Dargis the award for Bestest One Ever. 8D

i jus came back from the movie and i very disrespectfully agree with almost everything the reviewer has said, since i had a rollicking good time at the movie, along with the majority of the audience :D one thing i do agree with, is tat we were obviously watching a michael bay movie - and since it's a movie directed bt him, why shouldn't it be easily identifiable by his signature style where there are heaps of shiny explosions and OTT drama? oh, and did i mention the bits of brilliant humour tat popped up at the least expected places?

there were at least 8 of us there who belong to none of the 4 discrete categories she has so objectively and impartially listed, nor as far as i noe, do we collect toys, fantasise bt sex with megan fox, tho i for one am unashamedly a total sucker for shia labeouf. apparently we must be the - i don't know - lost half of the target audience tat have fallen thru the cracks of the reviewer's massively encompassing world view :p

Daww, I guess the reviewer wanted more out of the movie than shiny explosions and OTT drama -- I'm wondering whether I should still go see it as a general good Crash and Bang WHEE type movie, just that there's been so much feedback online about it making women objectified. D: It is not so bad, hopefully, coming from what you've said? :D?

tat's why i feel they're making too much out of it - the only instances i can think of women being objectified was when sam jus got to his college dorms and his geek roommates were salivating over them. but so wat? they are freshly-minted geek college boys who jus got released from high school and home into freedom, and so they're like starving ppl at a buffet.

and if i really wanna meta-analyse it, i can also say at one point, the director and creative team were implying tat one can get 'punished' for being led by ur dicks. lolz. we can draw lots of conclusions if we want - but really, i definitely believe it's worth watching, tho it IS a bit long. it is very current tho, and rather tongue-in-cheek, i dowan to spoil u in case u watch it, but they really do mention very recent happenings XDD plus the comedy is not only in the geek-speak, but also in the action itself :)

i jus feel like i HAVE to rebutt tat silly reviewer tho, so there will be something on my lj :p dun mind me, yeah? at the end of the day, it's jus a movie ^_

:D :D No no no, it's uber cool to see multiple POVS. Seriously, like, ALL the reviews I've read so far from everywhere have been bad, NYT just did the literal worst/most erudite and punishing of the lot. But maybe everyone's missing the point of a movie like Transformers - that it's MEANT to use crash/bang in this way. :D

*wants to catch it over the weekend*

Also don't mind me posting stuff like this - I don't want to end up having anyone feel like I've flamed something they like DDDD:

All the reviews have been horrible, and it's doing, what, $400 million? Did you see the first one? It's not as good as the first, but it is a fun movie. Will it win an Oscar for anything outside of special effects? No. But we had an awesome time, and will certainly get it when it comes out on Blu-Ray, and will probably see it again in the theaters.
