My first and last post about race/identity/privilege/differences/being human/life&42

Apr 18, 2009 02:20

A lot of stuff's been going down in LJ land of late - Dreamwidth and Racefail and many other deep, deep things that I can't hope to ever understand or involve myself in. So instead I write a long thing here, which is just my two cents, but maybe you'll all find it an interesting one.

Also, calling out: a friend of mine is in a bit of pinch ( Read more... )

doing good like batman, thinking thinky thoughts, hi flist, life oh what art thou

*flops onto you* I have no good feedback at the moment, but just letting you know that I read through that and think it's really interesting and I'll probably be thinking about it for awhile. Also *hugs*

Also I sent an email to my mom and she has a film camera! And it's an SLR I think even or at least has detachable lenses! So I might try shooting in film soon if she'll let me borrow it.

Contrasting answers, until he leaned in and said, "Stability? But are you happy? It's like all of you - not just women - are like slaves. And coming from a Western country, I find that honestly, truly sad that you can't be who you want to be. Because of the patriarchy, it controls -- family is like a cage --"

'm quite shocked to read that. *Hugs* May I be presumptuous and say something here ? Whatever you do, don't give up the basic values.

*g* He was really nice about it, though. I think he really does want to understand more about cultures - he does great photography in Japan, on top of being based in Thailand, and a while later when we'd both calmed down he was saying, I want to respect different cultures, and even if I don't understand it, I want to be able to let others know that I'm happy for the differences, and I went, a bit wryly, But you called some of what my country is "sad", and he honestly looked shocked - and then sheepish. We had a good time about it. :D

I think we all need a good set of basic values! "Asian" ones may seem a little bit hardcore to non-"Asian" asjflja OR WHATEVER, but I do love them, and adapt them when I can. \o

Ah yes, Mediterranean

Well, dunno about hardcore, all I can say is rights and duties go together, one can't have the former without carrying out the latter and not get repercussions
As for happiness, ahem ... no, I'm not going to invite wank here

It's not easy to explain here, and I don't want to, really
Well, when you get to Can, maybe things will become clearer still :)
As you must have found out by now, I am Asian ... I have travelled a bit, and I am perfectly ready to give my observations since you're just about starting to, but ... er ... not here

Oh, btw, I friended you thru olivegreengarb ... thought I'd mention it
And BlastNRip is mine too :)

Get to Can? *bit confused!*

*g* Yeah, I think the entire concept of rights/duties is a hugely complex and amazing one, and living life with and around it makes for a fulfilling... everything, really.

Had a skim through your essay. Like your original fiction and your post on photography, I'll get back to it properly. Comments etc. are delayed but forthcoming ^^. On the subject of your essay, let me briefly say that on top of the fact that it is articulate and insightful (things I've come to expect of you, in your own Special-K-way <3) the inherent humanism underlying it is something of a relief. I'm slowly being immersed in the academic literature surrounding race and racism (before that it was largely to do with gender and sexuality) and quite frankly it does my head in sometimes.

Anyway, I'd be happy to take a look at what your friend has to offer in terms of DVDs, books etc. I've been purchasing second-hand books in bulk from ebay anyway.

*g* I re-read it and wince a little, because 2am logic makes for a lot of fluffy language. AH WELL, I guess I am a bit of a fluffy person at heart anyway. \o Academic literature makes me feel like a soulless human being sometimes, I've gotta agree.

Mostly me who's selling the DVDs/books, really! :D My room needs some clearing, anyway. \o
