Maybe you should dedicate a container to holding cables, like the /dev/null box Himself and I had.

I currently have a drawer in a plastic organizer unit that holds cables and assorted small parts like a multi-card reader.

I do have boxes for that. One for powercables (two, actually) one for ethernet, one for misc. The system breaks down when cables don't get put into boxes though ... :(
