H2G2 RPG

After 30-45 minutes of googling I didn't find a pre-existing RPG based on the HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I found H2G2 refrences on RPG forums, and vise versa, as well as the InfoCom game, an LJ community, and a pubcrawl larp that sounds fun, but I'm looking to create a more structured game ( Read more... )

...h2g2 doesn't seem like it likes rules. Assigning stats and rolling dice seem counter to the feel of the 'verse. I'd recommend either considering a purely narative game, with a GM who plays the part of random chance, and improbablity, and just let the players try to react the best they can.

Failing that, look into a diceless system for the game. Something where there are stats and rules, but things aren't decided based upon dice, they're decided based upon how witty and amusing the action is. ^_^

As for someone knowledgable in the 'verse. Attempt to corner Gale. He is the ultimate walking talking hitchhiker's cross reference guide. ^_^

The BESM system has a few stats but is mostly a narritive type of game. You might want to look into something like that to keep witht he verse and not constrain it too much. It's just a thought though.

Ignore these posts. No universe is inherently rules-light, or rules-heavy. Any setting can be fit into a rules heavy system (Rolemaster!) just as well as it fits into a rules light system (Pure Free-form, or The Window, or similar).

Personally, I think GURPS is the best option for this. You know it's a solid system, you know it's easily adaptable to any genre/style, and you may even be able to steal components from various pre-existing GURPS games.

If you wanted to go d20, I'd start with d20 Future as the basis. (which is technically an add-on to d20 Modern). You would have to stat up various common races, but that really doesn't seem particularly difficult.

And, as an aside, it's probably best to have as /few/ races as possible and simply group many of them into a generic "Humanoid" race, that would be the equivalent of Humans.

Oh, I briefly mentioned this in the above post, but I figure I'll expound on it a bit more. If you wanted to go with a "lighter" system, with few actual rules, you might consider The Window

It's exceedingly modular and flexible, and will literally fit ANY setting. Because of this, there are almost no actual rules, just guidelines for how to make checks with dice, and how characters should be set up. The GM will have to do a lot more work and make more decisions.

But, for a setting as non-standard and... "odd" as the H2G2 setting is, it might be a good system.
