I have now sent off 208 letters to congress. The topic? Credit card companies. I chose to put it on colored resume paper, so I had to buy about $75 worth of paper and envelopes (almost a ream's worth,) and then another $75 worth of postage. Sure, it cost a little money to do it but I believe in putting your money where your mouth is. It was a ( Read more... )

Wonderful ideas, but I think you're right, and it is not likely to result in much by itself. Now, if 10 of your LJ friends decided to do something similar with their own letters (not copying your letter with minor changes or none at all, but writing their own), and posted such on their journals, and 10 of each of their friends did the same, and so on, then it might do something. But isolated letters, even well-written ones, rarely have much impact in Washington. It takes the weight of many people asking for the same kinds of things at the same time to get attention.

On the other hand, who knows, maybe it will reach someone and strike a nerve. Far stranger things have happened.

I agree. I imagine I'll be getting a lot of "Thank you for your correspondance. We hope you feel happier with this response while we put your letter in the circular file" responses. But to do nothing means to accept and condone the way things are now.

My hope was by putting it on paper, and nice paper at that, it would catch some staffer's eye enough to read it. This was a complete accident, but the top fold ended up being _right_ below the "hope in the dark" line, so hopefully that'll hook them in.
