I remember how people on the elevators were actually "looking" into each others eyes with compasion as we were evacuated from our building. People that, otherwise, would be staring at the doors or at the ceiling.
I live in a military town. Half of the attorneys in our office (various senior level military) were deployed immediately to parts unknown...even by their families.
I remember seeing the shoe. I had the same reaction.
As the months passed...none of the deployed had returned but one. It was her brother whose beheading was splashed across the world wide web.
