Any such messages that might have some truth in them will always have a link to the actual website (like, in this case, it would have a link to a website with domain www.livejournal.com, or if it was hotmail, it would have www.hotmail.com in the domain). Any other time is a scam and is usually either a virus, worm, trojan, password stealer, etc etc.

Yeah. Never click a link if you're not sure that it's safe. First thing to check is the ending tag. If it's html, there's not much you can say. But if you see something like, say, .pif, don't open it unless you know for certain it is safe.
