“I really appreciate all your help with this project Hermione. I’ve never met someone so bright at your age,” Reid replied. Dumbledore’s recommendation had proved to be accurate and well worth the risk he’d taken. His research on the power these wizards held had been well received, if not skeptically on the part of some. He had discovered their world soon after he’d gotten his own powers and often wondered how it worked that certain children would have incredible powers without such radiation, or even without hereditary influence.
“I have to admit that I’m fascinated by your choice of research,” Hermione said. “I know that many wizards may not find it appropriate or in good taste, but if it can give us a further understanding of our own selves, then the results will be well worth it.”
Reid’s eyes widened in surprise. Such maturity from children was surprising, because not even Johnny usually demonstrated such a level of understanding. “I’ve been meaning to ask you, I heard one of the other children mention a word I don’t understand. What is a mudblood?” After asking, he suddenly knew he’d misstepped.
“It’s not a word that is usually used in good taste or in civilized conversation,” she replied slowly. “It is a profane, insulting term for someone like me, who has no heritage of magic in the family.”
“I’m sorry,” Reid said. “But I will say this, anyone who would call you such a name doesn’t know you well, because you are the brightest student I have ever met.”
