I stole the tricep machine from some dude at the gym today. Oops. To be fair, I was sitting across from it at the row machine, and no one touched it for the entire time I was doing my thing. I moved the towel off the weight stack and fixed the weights, and this dude wanders over ( Read more... )

According to Body4Life which is something I follow, 30 seconds between sets is enough. Some Euro/Austrian methods call for 1min. But that's about it.

I just ask if I can alternate sets with them.

I think 2-3 minutes is customary, etiquette-wise.
Me, I like to take a half hour nap in between. My workouts generally take 3-4 days.

Minimum 30 seconds.

Maximum for a healthy, normal male is about 3 minutes, but that for recovery using very heavy weight, like 8 rep sets at 75%-90% of your single rep max. Anything longer than that and you're probably wasting time.

The towel as a placeholder kind of thing seems universal, but a lot of gyms open to the public specifically prohibit the practice.
