The first computer I ever got was a Packard Bell 486 DX2. 33Mhz processor, 4MB of RAM and a 400MB hard drive. It ran Windows 3.11 and came with a newfangled CD drive which was pretty high tech. It also had a port to connect a 56k modem to a phone line that I never actually used, because.. Interwhat ( Read more... )

I can't remember my first laptop, back in 1993. I think it cost $1200 and was a 486 as well, with black and white LCD monitor. The light broke on it, so I had to shine a lamp on it to see what I was typing. That didn't last long.

My next real laptop was 1997 when I went to Japan. It had a whole gig of a hard drive and a color monitor: Toshiba Satellite. Even had a CD player that i could swap out the Disk Drive to use. Ran Windows 95 and cost me (along with a copy of Wordperfect and Civ II) $2100. That started my credit card bill that took 8 years to pay off.

My current laptop cost $1200, is half the size, and 150 times as powerful. Kids today don't understand, man!

My first was a 386 SX 25 MHz, 28 MB of HD space, 2MB RAM. No sound card, no printer VGA graphics card (I think, coul've been SVGA), 2.5 and 5.25 floppy drives! I could barely run WIN3.0 & couldn't run Quest For Glory IV when it came out (4MB RAM requirement).

I did become an expert with DOS, however...

You were using a 486 until recently??? That's fucked up! That's barbaric!

I guess I'm old, because my first computer was an Atari 800. My dad spent $2000 to upgrade it to 64K RAM ;)
