Let me preface this rant with a quick aside: My Mom was an admissions counselor at UCI, and had to make these exact decisions about which classes counted, and which ones didn't. Ultimately, this decided who got into a prestigious university, and who had to slog through community colleges taking remedial courses. Hi, Mom!

It's called a well-rounded education, Jesus had one:

physical Ed - walk on water
chemistry - water into wine
biology - raising Lazarus from the dead
physics - parting the Red Sea

Wait, that was Moses...um, yea...you get my point.

1. This article says that if students don't have the required college prep courses, the UC system will waive the requirement if they rock an SAT subject test. I wonder if any of the students took the test to get around the science requirements, or if they just went straight to lawsuit?

You can even test out of certain subjects all together. When I was in school, all graduates of the US system had to take a foreign language. Or you could show proficiency by passing a test. I did...no espanol por mi.

Now I wish I had taken those darn classes b/c I don't remember any spanish at all.

I tried to test out of English Lit and failed miserably. I still don't remember anything I "learn."

It might have changed, but when I was applying for college, UC either required or seriously recommended three years of foreign language. I didn't apply because I only had 2 years of language when I was doing my applications.

The stupid guidance counselors had thrown a fit when I told them I wanted to drop language in order to take drawing.

"But you can't go to UC with only two years!"
"I'm not applying to UC."
"But..."
"I've already decided to major in art, and you people aren't letting me take art here because you think it's an elective. It's not an elective for me-- I need that class."
"Well..."
"Here's a letter from my mom who knows more about this crap than you do. If I change my mind I'll go to Saddleback and make it up. Can I take art now?"

[bitter? me? never. but I did get the english requirements waived. :) ]

At UCLA, you could take the language test (for designated languages only, Vietnamese was not included) which would place you depending on how well you did. I don't remember which level you needed to get to Level 2 or 3, all I know is I tested above. So if you knew a little bit, you could bypass level 1 and go directly to level 2.
