To absorb the proper nutrients the Koala has a very slow metabolic rate. They also have an enlarged Caecum which is where the very toxic eucalyptus leaves are detoxified. The female koalas caecum is where a substance called "pap" is produced from. This is the substance you were inquiring about. For the first 21 weeks the joey will feed on milk alone. For 22 to 30 weeks it will eat "pap" Which is a form of faeces from the mother. In the pap there are micro-organisms that will ween the young joey off of their mothers milk and help transition it to solid food, such as the poisonous eucalyptus leaves.
