If you surround yourself with theists who don't care about their own righteousness, I think things can be different. faith is a tough thing, even for the faithful. everyone has negative things about them, but the idea is to accept that imperfection, as everyone is not a perfect gemstone. we all have impurities and inclusions.

as a side note, it doesnt sound like you are atheist, you are anti-theist. at least from that one experience anyway, i would be against god and the idea of religion, if thats how horrible it treated me.

I realize maybe atheism isn't the total correct way to describe my beliefs, but it's the closest thing to what the general population knows. I call myself an atheist to avoid confusion and further questioning.

When I went greek in college, it was considered a fraternity because the group was professional as opposed to social. Still, I call it a sorority most of the time because people don't understand the concept of an all girl fraternity. It's just easier.

I used to call myself an atheist, but now when people ask me I tell them i believe in the Universe.

There is a force out there stronger than us, but it's sure as hell not God.

The camp I was bused to was out in the middle of nowhere on top of a mountain!

This letter came from a wild hair I got this morning to bring closure to the anger I was holding on to towards those people. If you're sister is still pissed about what happened to her as a child, I suggest finding them and doing the same thing I did. It's very freeing!

I was also sent to Vacation Bible School for free babysitting. There was no "vacation" about it. To their credit though, all those people wanted to do was teach me Bible stories and send me home at the end of the day.

Agnostic is probably a better word than atheist for you. Also it is not christianity that did you wrong, it was the Baptist church that did you wrong. It's the one thing about the Baptist that utterly gets under my skin. There are some decent ones out there (the guy that was the musician for our Saturday night services at the Methodist church I go to) but there are some freakin' idiots out there (like the ones that preach at my SIL's church in Union MO). I too would have been scarred had I encountered that kind of thing in my youth. It was bad enough that I had very bad taste for organized religion since my youth for other reasons. Although as an adult I find it comforting to have a faith community that I can trust and know that I won't be judged for not having the fullest faith in religion.

I know that religion can be used as a tool to help people through all sorts of difficult situations. I was sincere when I wrote that religion is supposed to give people peace. I believe that it does. But it's not for me. And I wish people could have their religion and just be happy with it by themselves instead on pushing it on everyone else.

I'm not into that whole pushing religion on anyone. I like to be relatively quiet about the whole thing but let people know just enough that they can feel like they can approach me about if they want. When you start slamming peoples heads with Bibles and the like, that is when I get really weirded out.

Reassuring fables are no substitute for an accurate assessment of the situation.

I tried to have an actual discussion about religion with this girl I met my first day in college...it quickly broke down to her telling me that "Well you're going to hell anyway."

And, here I thought that college was about the exchange of ideas (and bodily fluids, truth be told her roommate was cute).

You probably frustrated her. But that doesn't sound very loving and accepting.
