I agree, Inception is much better than the Matrix. The ending... wow! The ending had me thinking about the movie almost non-stop for around a week after I saw it.
Inception is definitely a heist movie with a side order of sci-fi. I found it pretty straightforward, really; very elegant, and the visuals were fantastic, but not at all confusing. Doesn't live up to the hype, but I think nothing could.
My main problem was that Cobb and his angst were not as interesting as some of the back-up characters. It's like they could have had the wisecracking ensemble cast you mention but chose to shut it down to focus on Cobb - pity.
