Overall, I think, that political and social (activist) fractions in the US are incredibly obsessed with seeking purity among their disciples.

I guess I said that a couple of times before...
If you know about the Puritan roots of the US, this behavior doesn't suprise you.

Religion and complex political ideologies aren't far apart from each other.
So, if you have a social base for this featured with an ancient obsession of unconditionally needing purity within the community - or else God will throw stones from the sky upon them or let the next harvest be horrible and a lot of people in the community die from hunger -, then... how could it be different that this ancient base survives in modern structures still?

It's a matter of how development works in general... Everything builds upon an older thing as a base.
