Niall Ferguson, a conservative historian and public intellectual, claims that an empire's days are numbered once it spends more on interest payments than on its military. He calls this, rather boldly, Ferguson's Law.

Hm... I would put the mark to the point in time when the US was among the winners of WWII (despite being an agile trade partner of Nazi Germany for quite some time) and when the states decided to make West Germany a political project, aimed at being the front row to fight communism by advertising the capitqalist system, supplying it with consumer goods and even with the first paper money of the new D-Mark currency.
