I'm skimming this paper,

and the Wikipedia article on Radical feminism,

as further thought after finishing That Guy in Our Women's Studies ClassI've written before how I was attracted to women's rights from a very young age, the first male student to join the ERA parade at my school in 3rd grade.  Such an exciting time, the Equal Rights Amendment ( Read more... )

"Partriarchy" - are we talking about Christian church? Are we talking about the social hiearchy in highly Muslim countries? If that was so, I'd give you a "yes".
But for the world that you and I live in, and that you mean, I'd loudly say "BULLSHIT!".
Those are rose-colored ideological glasses.
Mistaking cronyism for an "all males work against all females who want to enter the same ranks as them"-conspiracy.
If women enter these ranks, they behave completely the same. Giving advantages to family members, benefitting "friends", securing supply for people they personally know (and like), blatantly lying to the public about their practices and if they get caught - acting out everything that is against the rules and limitations that actually exist for their acquired position.
Plus, plotting against those in the high ranks and on lower levels which they personally don't like or which they deem as a "danger" to their own position.

That's not patriarchy, that's called "power-hungry", and it depends on bad character traits.

Over here in my world (suburban USA) women mostly can't even enter the ranks of the ruling class.

How many men can't too because they have no wealthy heritage backing them?

That's really beside the point (it's "what-about-ism"). If you look at the boards of directors of big corporations, if you look at judges in the court system, if you look at anywhere powerful men are gathered together, that's pretty much what they are: men. Maybe one token woman.

I don't disagree that poor people or even middle class people, and those whose skin colors are not lily-white, and those whose parents could not send them to expensive schools - also face discrimination. But again, we were talking about the patriarchy.

I'll readily admit that I *am* a total theory-head, and also that the onus lies on folks like me to explain why intricately complex theories are a good thing instead of an opportunity to obfuscate things. And why straightforward common-sensical explanations aren't necessarily a good thing and can be a mechanism for insisting that the way things are is the way things are supposed to be.

I'm quite flattered that after reading the book you're now willing to plow through the actual theory paper :)
