There's 13,000 school districts and 32,000 private schools in the US. So whenever people talk about what's going on in "schools" I think nobody has any idea what's going on in schools. It's so because the local institutions and circles want to keep their privileges over what is taught in their schools and what the money is spent on.
It's the same reason for why educations is a matter of the federal states here... Privileges in order to have control over what and how to design what kids get to hear as "education" in school.
And in the end, none of that is truly comparable internationally, not even to speak of comparable within the same country.
