If taking on such a task, I'd first go after finding an answer towards if the women at the time to portray really felt the treatment they received in general from society and they way they lived or had to live as that sexist truly as the view of the present wants to label something.
Something that the snobbish "progressive" view of your American armchair university SJWs forgets is: As many women who fought for being able to do what they want and getting treated as a human were also comfortable with their lives in the conservative bubble. Enough women these days still aim for such a lifestyle - like "get a husband husband, he has to earn the money they spend and they can rest at home all day and live a life in the lap of luxury".
Think of it - does this mental virus exist for men? No, it doesn't.
