The infamous Seattle Autonomous Zone -- which excluded police -- formed during June 2020 in the midst of widespread protests against the killing of George Floyd -- experienced repeated episodes of gun violence, with six people shot -- two of whom died.  There were also a number of sexual assaults

"The revolution eats its own children", as they say here in some political circles...

Well, if looking at it from the bigger picture, beside creating an own militia which you cannot control or make sure how virtuous they behave, it's also one step of many to privatizing public security completely.
Every billionaire (or whoever owns enough money too) will have its own police force, its own armada of mercenaries (mind you: this already exists for military purposes), through which the billionaire can enforce and put into act whatever it wants

Two thoughts: (1) You can stop the police from participating, but you can't really stop them from being anywhere in NYC they choose to be. (2) It's not that I think the organizers would do anything like this, but I am reminded of what happened with the private security force who were hired for the concert at Altamont in 1969.
