These days, I am reading a  collection of short stories from Somerset Maugham. I see that many of his stories have a guy who has somehow lost interest in general routine life/ambitious career oriented life and is after simple "peace of mind". I would expect you to write about a person being nice to many people and at the same time trying to being right, causing damage to self in terms of mental dilemmas, guilt, physical exhaustion..

You would write about a person who wakes up very early on Sunday mornings and goes for long drives :P

Btw, doesn't Somerset Maugham write well? I read Far from the Madding Crowd and it was beautifully written, though the theme is nothing great.

Oh ! yes, he writes exceedingly well.. no doubt about that. Even in this collection of short stories, the themes are varied and bold and characters are sharply developed. All stories have a different taste. I just mentioned that one theme seems to be more of his favorite than the rest :)

Er, scratch that. I just remembered that Far from the Madding Crowd is by Thomas Hardy.

But yeah, Somerset Maugham has been on my to-read list forever, mainly because of the short stories.
