cell phones without plans.

anyone here know where i might be able to find a cingular or unlocked cell phone without having to get a new plan? a friend's phone fell into water, and she can't really afford a brand new phone, so preferably used or anything under $75 or so... right now she's got my old one, and that one only worked every now and then. thanks!

well i have a sony ericsson camera phone that has seen better days (thank wrapmeuptight) and the picture quality is horrible at best... but it works! it has lots of cosmetic damage, but it works.

let me know if you want it... i originally sold it to Nick for $40, and then i wanted it back when his contract recently ended, but the picture quality sucked a lot more than when it was brand new, so I don't really want/need it anymore..

is it the blue one with the screen on the front and the loop antena? 'cause that's the one that just met a toilet. if so, i'm sure we can just swap the case thing on it...

Try ebay - I've dunked a couple phones myself (you'd think I'd learn!) and have had good luck with finding unlocked phones on Ebay. Or maybe put up a "wanted" post on Craigslist.

i've had to do this more times than i care to admit -only one because of me, quite a few for her- and with craigslist i usually end up with people telling me they have $874326587329756 phones, even though i specifically say no more than $25-50. it's more annoying than helpful.

Keep in mind that due to the way the cellphone software works, some companies have an ESN (electronic serial number) restriction that means you can't use other company's cellphones on their network. I haven't worked for Cingular so I don't know if this applies to them.

Currently I am with Sprint. I know that there, one can buy a new phone at any time, you just don't get the $150 service agreement rebate on it (so 'free' phones cost $150.)

I would suggest talking to a Cingular rep. They can often give you tips and hints. But if they are like all the other companies I've worked for, talk to 3 or 4 reps, since different people will know different things and different shortcuts/cool tips.

Phonescoop.com can also tell you if a phone is compatable with your company's network. A Verizon phone uses a different radio spectrum than a Sprint phone. Aside from the ESN thing you'll need to make sure a new phone is compatible. 8-)
