I just turned sixteen this week so I'm looking to eventually get a part time job. I still have a full school day so evenings and weekends are best. I'd like a "real" job now because baby and dog sitting isn't cutting it anymore as much as I'd like it to because I enjoy it ( Read more... )

The plaza would probably be ok. Since each space on the Plaza are owned by different companies, the atmosphere is different. I think jobs pay enough that adults are able to work there and support themselves so hopefully it pays a little more than your local subway. The good thing is that places are looking for seasonal employees, the bad thing is that seasonal usually means you'll be let go after the first of the year. Also the economy is totally crappy and a lot of places aren't hiring a lot. I worked at Target in high school and enjoyed it. I'd recommend a non cashiering job because then you won't be as responsible for getting people to sign up for their credit card. What else. Barnes and Noble would be fun I'm sure. If you live near a movie theatre that could be fun too. Maybe retail stores like Old Navy. If you like animals, check out at Petsmart or another pet friendly store.

My main concern is the seasonal thing, I'd like to hold a steady job for the next few years. I wonder if waiting until after the holidays are over gives me a better chance of this. I'll look around in places like that, thank you.

Sometimes if you impress the managers they'll ask you to stay on past the holidays but in retail land, the first quarter of the year is not a strong time for them -- even in a normal economy. Not to sound like Debbie Downer but the odds are against you.

Be sure to let them know you're looking for long term employment too. It also helps if your schedule is fairly open (which I know can be hard for a student) but don't be one of those jerks who HAS to have every Friday night off just because it is Friday blahblah.

Good luck!!

Yeah, I basically plan on doing whatever they tell me to do or need me for if I get lucky and someplace takes me.

I got the email notification for the AIM comment but it's not showing up here on the page, but I'm afraid I don't have AIM on this computer, sorry!

I have no idea if this is a good fit for you, I was just surprised to see a Kansas City company profiled on CNN for "companies now hiring."
