Hi! I actually have a friend from here who is now an attorney in Portland. If you want, I can drop her a line and see if she has some advice or knows anyone.
I will say that she is an attorney, specializing in Animal Law. But, I don't think she's solely in that realm. I will drop her a line and let you know what's what.
Heard back from my pal in Oregon. Hope this helps:
The job market in KC, at least for attorneys, is extremely favorable to job seekers! High salaries compared to the cost of living, plenty of offerings, etc. This person is right -- the Portland job market sucks eggs. Not just for attorneys, but for all professionals. (Part of what makes this city so great is all the educated people who move here; however, they saturate the job market.)
The MO bar exam is almost identical to the OR bar exam in terms of first-time taker pass rates (mid to high 80s.)
If this person wants to stay in Oregon, all he has to do is move to the sticks (ANYWHERE in Oregon outside of the 3 major cities) and open up shop as a solo practitioner. He'll make a killing!
I'm actually from the Portland Metro (Never lived in the city, grew up in the burbs Canby/Oregon City). My dad still lives in the Portland Metro.
Kansas City has a lot to offer. It really depends on what you are looking for. It is very different from Oregon, I will tell you that straight out.
Why are you looking to leave (besides the job market)? There may be things here that you can't get there, it really depends on what you are looking for. I love it here but I do miss somethings about Oregon. Not enough to move back, but I do miss them.
I strongly strongly support the "come and visit" concept. Also and, I know several of the respondents here in real life and support their comments 100% (triadruid, featherynscale, teross50 and rougewench)
Edit: Something to note! There is not just Missouri. There is a Kansas side to the KC Metro and it is *NOT* at all like the commenter above talks about. She's talking downtown KCMO, not Johnson County, KS (Overland Park, Olathe, Mission, Merriam)
I think the original naysayer lives in the northeast corner of 'urban' Kansas City. And yes, the houses there are old, affordable, and lovely, but they're also close to the crime-ier part of the City. I've lived in KC now for 10 years, most of it on the Missouri side of it, and have NEVER had my car broken into. You just need to know which parts of the metro to avoid, like all major/big cities

I have attorney friends of my own, of course - but no one's known of any openings yet. Anything helps.
