i'm looking for something TOTALLY different from the east coast crunch i'm used to. I spent some time living in Florida, and i love visiting florida, but i really am a Jersey girl at heart, so the laid back life just isn't for me full time. I just recently moved back to Jersey from Boston, and living in a city isn't for me either- i'm a 'burbs girl all the way, growing up just outside of Princeton, NJ, and I simply adore being 30 minutes from the Jersey shore (one of my favorite things EVER- there's no where else in the world like a Jersey boardwalk, for peoplewatching, cheap entertainment, ocean air, sun, music, whatever...), 45 from Philly, and 45 from NY ( ... )

heh, i LOVED Boston, the city, but Massachusetts itself.. the rest of the state...blows big hairy monkey balls, in my book ('scuse the phrase), i was just aggravated, because based on what i'd seem, for such a 'liberal' state, massachusetts residents took a very cookie cutter, narrow view of life. It was ok to have these progressive laws on the books, and for OTHER people to lead "out there" lifestyles, just as long as it didn't bother all the other drones themselves. Jersey, from a legal standpoint, is a slightly more conservative state, but the people on the whole are more accepting and open to new ideas and change, most notably, than massachusetts natives it seems.

If you'll be spending time in the region (and have friends to hang out with), I highly recommend the Lake of the Ozarks. But, if you don't have at least one other person to do stuff with, it might not be the best idea. Water skiing by yourself kind of sucks.

I would definitely hang out in Kansas City for a short while - but it's a city like any other - so you probably won't come away from it with anything you couldn't have already done in Jersey. (Btw, if you were to come here, I recommend focusing your time on Kansas City, MO, because it's the larger and more tourist friendly of the Kansas City's.)

my roommate Courtney is from somewheres near KC,MO, so i'll probably drag her butt with me-
regardless, city or not, it's not NY. Which I have a very love/hate relationship with. there's just so much, i don't know how i'll fit everything i wnat to in!

I was trying to think of something unique to this area that's actually something to DO, other than driving across prairieland, heh. If time allows, check out Steamboat Arabia: http://www.1856.com/ It's not something you'd find in NJ, at least. :)

As for things I love about this area...whereas KS is largely wheat-colored and flat, just across the state line in MO, you'll find tons of rolling, green hills. I also love that while KC (the city) has all the city-ish things you could ask for, you're within a 30 minute drive of BFE, where all you see is a landscape of corn and cows.

As a motorcycle fan, I love that.

i don't have anything specific i'm looking for- other than something different from Jersey, and less populated. I've found areas in central Florida and western Massachusetts that aren't very populated, even places in southern Jersey that are so unpopulated that it's hard to even find electricity... but they're all such familiar areas to me, i just want something completely different. I appreciate the recommendations, i'll look into them when i set down to really plan. I'll be driving- I can't justify the idea of being stuck in or around a hotel and whatever transportation i can find surrounding- i want to be able to pick up and go.

Should you stray into Missouri - way into MIssouri, there are some kinda cool places in the central part of the state. In the early 1800's German settlers chose to stay in and around what is now the town of Hermann because of the region's similarity to the Rhineland. There are a few wineries and some realy cool bed and breakfast's that you may like. Check out these sites if you like.
