I'm sorry that happened to you. I've seen the way people drive in Westport, and I'm not at all surprised.

I live in DC. If you have a flat tire, you'll get the finger and be screamed at for stopping up traffic.

i've found that this year, everyone, and i do mean *everyone* is in a craptastic mood. it seems worse this year than in previous years around christmas really, though it could also be the fact that i'm still "growing up" in terms of having to go out and get shopping done for myself and everything.

rest assured, that if i were in that part of town today -which i am fairly regularly since my best friends all go to umkc, but they're on break- and had seen you in said condition walking with a tire and everything, i would have stopped, whether or not i could have done anything.

i haven't really noticed the craptastic mood, but I got all my shopping done a couple weeks ago.

my truck broke an axel in a grocery store parking lot, and literally couldn't move. someone tried to start a fight with me over it. others were honking at me and flipping me off as though i planned on it breaking. others thought i was sitting and waiting for a parking spot and started a line behind me.

the only nice person was the lady with her kid who had to figure out how to get out of her parking spot -my friend was with me, and she helped direct them away from hitting my truck. the woman smiled and waved as she drove away.

of course that's not to say that i'm going from that incident alone, but it's the one that sticks out in my mind the most right now.

Sorry, voice of dissent.

You don't have a spare?
A cell phone and a friend?
A AAA membership?
Road coverage through your insurance company?

I have found that for flats, most people won't give you a second glance. But, if you have a serious car problem, most people will stop to help. I was once horribly rear ended, and later, blew a gasket on an old car (lots of smoke) - people turned around on the highway to come back and offer assistance.

She was stopped in front of a Quick Trip. It's not like she was on a desolate road, far, far away from somewhere that she could help herself.

Yeah, it sucks she had a flat, and we can even go so far as to say that it sucks we live in a society where the first thought of people is to leave someone to help themselves, but expecting the kindness of strangers (especially when you have a minor problem within spitting distance of a gas station) is kind of a stretch, at best.

(PS. I had a flat recently - I discovered my spare tire was flat, too. (New car - I should of checked when I bought it.) So I walked to a nearby business and ASKED for help. Incidentally, they had an air compressor, and aired up my spare so I could go get my tire fixed.)

I agree. I got a lot of help when I was rear-ended

Most people have cell-phones and they can call a tow-company or something with a flat.
