Dre was waiting just inside the gate in his white Chinese tunic, his black pants, and his dirty sneakers as he sat in the grass, tearing at it with his fingers.
He had managed to fight back the tears once again, but the burning in his throat was painful. It kept reminding him of everything and it flared each time he breathed, and then he would curse and punch the ground again. His knuckles were already on the scraped and dirty side.
Thus it was a wonderful distraction to hear Goku's voice, and Dre scrambled quickly to his feet.
The voice came from much closer than he expected. Goku pushed the gate door open to step through and glanced to his right just as Dre was rising to stand. The kid was lanky but fit, and just a little shorter than Goku.
"Hey! Awesome to finally meet you! In person, I mean." Goku beamed at him, smiling from ear to ear. It was kind of funny to be friends with someone before you ever met them, but he supposed that was one cool thing about Kannagara. You could get to know all kinds of people, even if they weren't in the same place as you were.
Dre nodded, starting to cheer up a bit already, and his braids bounced around his neck. "S'great to see you, man." The wide smile on Goku's face was enough to inspire a clumsy one on his own.
He then tilted his head a little, "were you close by?" He remembered that Goku had been wandering before and had to wonder about how the boy didn't seem absolutely exhausted.
Then, casting a glance around, he waved his hand to the gate and towards the street. "Lets get out of here, I need to get out and see something!" He tried his best to sound excited, and he was excited, but part of the reason he was excited was because he needed something to lift that tired feeling of sadness.
"We totally should have done this a while ago," he laughed a little, weak but sincere.
He wanted life to go back to the way it was a few days before.
"Kinda. Today's my day off and stuff, so I was hanging out at the beach." Goku had a sun-drenched look about him, evident in the slight flush of color in his cheeks and golden highlights in his hair. The ocean was something that fascinated him, since he'd never seen a body of water quite so big before he arrived in Kannagara. Back in Shangri-la, he'd seen a river too wide to swim across, but it still didn't compare to the size of this ocean.
"And yeah, I know! I can't believe we're only just doing this," Goku said with a sheepish grin. "We talked about going out like, a week ago!"
He followed after Dre out the gates of his house, and they were on the streets of Hisato. They turned down the lane and then right, toward the eastern border of the village, where they would then turn south toward Yomisato.
"So, what's been up with you?" he asked, tilting his head to look at him as they walked.
Dre almost laughed at the thought of the beach. It had been so long since he had been. Over a year since he moved to China. And Detroit had been well...Detroit. He was already starting to appreciate talking to someone who actually enjoyed the normal stuff. The beach, the sun, adventures...
He twitched a little at the question and shrugged his shoulders a little to try and keep a calm and collected demeanor. "...Its been lonely...Mr. Allen...he..he umm," he chewed a little at the inside of his cheek as he waited for the words to get to him. "...He got hurt real bad...by a bad person. He..he died." A small cough and a clearing of his throat before he forced himself to look up at the sky.
"...But he's gonna come back. So...so its gonna be okay..."
He gave a little nod as he tried to convince himself before peeking over to Goku, "...and you? See any cool stuff lately?"
